Sferisterio of Macerata
The Sferisterio of Macerata is a unique theatrical structure in its architectorial kind. Accordig to the most famous lyric singers the outdoor theater with the best acoustic in Italy.It rappresents one of the most important works of the late european Neoclassicism . in the first half of the nineteenth century some rich persons of Macerata wanted to provided the city of a permanent structure for the game of the ball with the armlet and in the same time an arena for the ’steccato’, the hunt to the taurus, the tauromachy very popular into the Papal States.
The building has been planed in the 1823 from the polyhedric neoclssic architect Ireneo Aleandri (planer, also, of the viaduct of the 'Ariccia and of the New Theatre of Spoleto).
The Sferisterio dues his name and his particoular plan to segment of ring to the original destination of use, such as place for the ball with the armlet.
It has a maximum capacity of circa 2800 persons and it is known from the 1921 for the summer lyric season called in the past "Macerata Opera" and today "Sferisterio Opera Festival" (artistic director Pier Luigi Pizzi).
