Wines and vines of the territory
Along the ways of smells and colours
The Municipality of Castelraimondo is in a particular lucky position for the turist who wants to visit the territory with the attention for the wine.We can visit different productive realities, each of them with differences and traditions and evolutions different one from each other.
We are inside the D.O.C. of “Verdicchio di Matelica,”of the “Colli Maceratesi ”,and in ”Esino” D.O.C.
We are on the border of the production area of the “Verdicchio dei Castelli of Jesi” and we are literally surrounded by the D.O.C. of the “Territories of S.Severino”,”San Ginesio”,”Serrapetrona”,”Rosso Piceno”. The particular climate of the territory, with notable day and night temperature range , the land particulary profuse of minerals allow to have a smaller production from a quantity point of view but decidedly better if you consider the quality.
Verdicchio of Matelica
The verdicchio of Matelica is the most important vine of this zone and it became DOC in 1967, before the "Verdicchio dei Castelli of Jesi". The disciplinary of production delimits the area in the municipalities of Cerreto d'Esi, Matelica, Castelraimondo, Esanatoglia, Fabriano and Gagliole.
The Verdicchio of Matelica is often presented as a " red vine disguised as a white one", given the predisposition to a marked longevity.
Also its historical importance is notable, the first signals of conservation of " vine corpse" inside the "wine cell" of the Ottoni Palace in Matelica date back to the year 1500 , while in the land register is written about many vineyards in the hilly and flat areas which surround Matelica.
The " Verdicchio of Matelica " is one of the rare italian vines which are autochthonous and, therefore, bearer of traditions, tastes and social values of the territory.
A brilliant appearance in youth, with the inclination for the gilt at maturity; ; with a flavour of fresh fruit and wild flowers; with a soft and robust taste, full-bodied and mineral ; with a minimum alcoholic strength of 11.5° it is suitable to many traditional dishes: from the salamis (ciauscolo, salami of Fabriano, ham, etc) to white meat (poultry, rabbit);from the first courses (vincisgrassi, tagliatelle) to the soups ( of wild endive and/or potatoes) and at the end to the fresh-water fish (trout, crayfish) and salt- water fish in spiced preparations and with sauce .
To try in the Passito version with fresh or ripe sheep's milk cheese to associate with single-flower honey.
Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi
It's most famous brother, the " Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi " is cultivated in the provinces of Ancona and Macerata until making the boundary of the production area of the Verdicchio di Matelica. It's a D.O.C. since 1969, and its structure is very different compared to the Matelica one..
Less long-lived with a fruitful scent, a straw yellow colour: these are the characteristics of the wine going down to the coastline.Going inwards, the wine is more full-bodied, with evolved scents and golden colours.
Other vines...
The hills of Macerata offer the possibility to move from a local vine to another. These vines had been rivalued only recently because considered as the expression of a forgotten typicalness.
So we can find the Maceratino, old vine that which adapts oneself to every kind of vine .The Pecorino(or Pecorina) and the Passerina, perhaps the only rivals of the Verdicchio di Matelica from a structural and complexity point of view. The Ciliegiolo, with fresh scents and a very thin structure. The Lacrima, another autochthonous marchigian vine that is living a successful period thanks to its pleasant drinkability.
The Vernaccia Nera, the only dark berried vine in Italy , in this D.O.C. is an optional component but in the D.O.C “Terreni di S.Severino” e “Serrapetrona” it is the most important and irreplaceable vine together with the Montepulciano.
There is also the D.O.C. “Esino” where we can find the Verdicchio di Matelica in addition to the other types of vine cultivated with white but also red berries.
The latest in order of age is the D.O.C. “San Ginesio” that takes again the use of the Vernaccia Nera together with other international vines (Merlot,Cabernet Franc e Cabernet Sauvignon) in still or sparkling version.
The “Rosso Piceno” is prepared with Sangiovese and Montepulciano grapes and it is the most extended D.O.C. of the Marche.
